If you own a boat, you probably spend a lot of time on maintenance and enhancements. Boats require lots of attention, so you should be able to spend your time caring for your boat—not worrying about how to safely and effectively get your boat in the water. Building a boat ramp using articulated concrete block mats is an ideal solution for the busy boat owner.
Articulated concrete block mats require less routine maintenance than other building materials. They can also be installed with very little impact to the shoreline, which preserves the condition and appearance of the land. These mats are also easily modified to accommodate the effects of erosion and can even help to reinforce eroded sections of the shoreline.
Articulated concrete block mats work best with sloping shorelines, and they are very adaptable to the natural shape of the bank. Before construction can begin, it’s important to examine any areas of the shoreline that are underwater. If underwater sections are too soft, some additional reinforcement may need to be completed before building the ramp itself. The bank itself may also need to be smoothed out before laying the mats.
When you’re ready to start building, you’ll probably need to have your mats delivered via truck, since they are quite large. Typically, a crane or excavator is necessary to install the mats, so you can expect at least some heavy machinery to do the job.
Laying the groundwork
Articulated concrete block mats work well because they interlink with one another, which makes installation a straightforward process. Usually the centermost mat should be installed first, because it determines the placement of all the other mats once they are connected.
When the mats are all in place, an excavator will be used to pull the mats taut so they sit snugly together. The loops used to pull the mats taut will then be reinforced and buried (they can easily be unearthed and used to tighten the mats later if needed). Finally, the mats will be covered with soil or gravel to fill any gaps and reinforce the mats.
Enjoying your new boat ramp
After the mats are covered up with soil or gravel, your new boat ramp is ready for use. With articulated concrete block mats, you’ll quickly see the benefits of less maintenance, less damage to the existing shoreline and more flexibility to make adjustments as the land itself shifts and changes shape.
