Having standards that every manufacturer or seller must adhere to protects consumers and helps raise the reputation of an industry at large.
But how do you classify quality in something like closed cell cable concrete mats? What makes one block of concrete better than another and how do standards ensure that every segment in a cable concrete mat is made to specification? There’s actually a lot that goes into recognizing and maintaining standards for cable concrete mats, and International Erosion Control Systems is proud to have the credence called out by these standards!
First things first, the concrete in each and every one of our mats must be constructed to the highest standards possible, so that it holds up to the rigorous wear and tear that’s sure to befall it once in place in its final application.
To that end, we made sure that our concrete is mixed to meet the requirements of CSA A23.1/A23.2 for materials, testing and methods of construction. This standard inherently says that the consistency of our materials and process used to create the concrete are standardized for quality!
We also adhere to CSA A23.1 Exposure Class C-2 requirements, which dictate strength and resilience requirements for concrete that’s exposed to the elements or heavy weathering. This standard ensures our concrete will stand the test of time.
Not only are there standards for the product itself when it comes to quality, there are also performance standards that must be met to ensure closed cell cable concrete mats will function as designed once they’re in place.
The supreme performance standard is ASTM D6684, as designated by the worldwide testing and standards organization, ASTM International. This standard examines all levels of performance in the application and use of articulated concrete to ensure it’s able to provide results for those who are investing in it.
There’s also an ASTM designation for the installation procedure and technique for laying articulated concrete, ASTM D6884. This sets a standard for ensuring concrete mats are laid in a way that befits their application and lets the industry know that there is a standard that needs to be met when installing concrete.
Finally, for water-based closed cell cable concrete installations, there’s yet another standard provided by ASTM that designates special standards for hydraulic stability—or, in other words, erosion control in waterways. This performance standard is known as ASTM D7277.
